Woke up to another beautiful day here in paradise. We don’t
even bother to check what the weather will be--it’s always the same--sunny and
warm. The only variance is in the amount of breeze. It rarely rains here in
this area, only about 10 inches a year! That’s why all of the resorts are built
on this coast—you can guarantee the tourist will have perfect weather. I guess
the weather is not a constant topic of conversation like it is in Canada.

We never even left the resort today. Oh, no, have we become
those kind of people? We’ll do better tomorrow. I strolled over to talk to the
concierge about going to a luau. She recommended one tomorrow at a resort a few
miles away, so we got tickets for that. (I confided in her that I wanted to be
a concierge as my retirement job.) Then I wandered down to the waterfront to
look for turtles. Green sea turtles are said to swim in and sun themselves on
the beach here. I was disappointed—no turtles.
We had our afternoon nap. Jim had been trying to put the
pictures on the blog. He was finally successful and we sent it out. Then we
dressed up a bit for dinner, as we have been doing most nights, and ate at the
oceanfront restaurant. It is right next to the expensive one, has the same scenery,
same live music, but a more casual menu and friendlier prices.
There is a fun little tradition here called the Torch Lighting and it happened while we were eating. Each night about a half hour before sunset you hear this guy blowing a conch shell. He does it 4 times, once in each direction. Then he runs all around the resort wearing a loincloth and carrying a lighted torch to light all of the torches on the property. Little kids run after him—it’s kind of cute. What a strange job!
After we ate we walked over to the turtle lookout – there
were turtles! Like 10 of them! So cool! I tried to get a picture but it’s hard
because you are not allowed to go near them. There are severe penalties if you
do. See that bump that looks like a rock, it’s actually a turtle. Back in the
room we watched a movie called “Non-Stop”. We enjoyed it, but it was perhaps
not the best choice since it was about terrorism on a plane, and we do have to
fly home.
So cool that you got to see the turtles! The resort sounds really lovely.
